A Real Sydney Downsizing Story

Downsizing from Mosman to Woollahra: A Real Sydney Retirement Move

After living near Balmoral Beach in Mosman for around 50 years, one of our clients was preparing to leave her long-term home and move into a much smaller self-contained unit at Montefiore in Woollahra. The biggest part of the job was not the removal itself. It was carefully downsizing decades of belongings, preparing the old home for settlement and helping make the transition manageable.

The Challenge

Moving from a Long-Term Family Home into a Much Smaller Space

When someone has lived in the same home for decades, downsizing is rarely just about packing boxes. There are years of furniture, personal belongings and memories to work through, while at the same time preparing the property for sale and settlement.

Around 50 Years in Mosman

Our client had spent around 50 years living near Balmoral Beach, making the move a significant life transition.

A Much Smaller New Home

Her new residence at Montefiore in Woollahra was a very small self-contained unit, so only a limited amount of furniture and belongings could come with her.

Four Downsizing Sessions

Rather than trying to make every decision at once, we worked with her over four separate downsizing and decluttering sessions.

Settlement Deadline

The old home also needed to be cleared and ready so the property settlement could proceed without the move becoming a last-minute rush.

A Smaller Move

By moving only carefully selected furniture and belongings, the physical removal became much simpler than the downsizing process itself.

Unpacking at Woollahra

Once the move was completed, we unpacked her belongings and helped her settle into the new space.

The Most Important Part

Downsizing Came Before Moving

Because the new unit was considerably smaller than the Mosman home, simply packing everything and deciding later was not an option.

The first priority was to work out what our client genuinely wanted and needed in her new home.

We then helped her gradually work through the remaining belongings across four separate decluttering and downsizing sessions.

Breaking the process into separate visits meant the decisions could be made progressively rather than expecting someone to sort through decades of possessions in one exhausting day.

This is also why we generally approach decluttering and downsizing before concentrating on the removal itself.

What We Were Trying to Achieve

  • Select furniture that would actually fit in the new unit
  • Reduce the volume of belongings before moving day
  • Avoid overcrowding the new residence
  • Allow enough time for thoughtful decisions
  • Prepare the Mosman property for settlement
  • Keep moving day as straightforward as possible
A Gradual Process

Why We Used Four Separate Downsizing Sessions

One of the most useful lessons from this move was that downsizing did not need to happen in a single day.

1

Work Through the Home Gradually

Each session allowed us to focus on manageable sections of the home rather than turning the entire process into one overwhelming task.

2

Make Better Decisions

Having time between sessions gave our client the opportunity to think about what she genuinely wanted to take into her new home.

3

Reduce Moving-Day Pressure

By the time moving day arrived, most of the difficult downsizing decisions had already been made.

Start with the New Home

The Size of the New Unit Determined What Could Come

A large family home and a small self-contained retirement unit are two completely different environments.

Furniture that worked perfectly in the Mosman home could easily overwhelm the new Woollahra residence.

For this reason, the practical question was not simply: “What should we get rid of?”

It was: “What will make the new home comfortable without making it overcrowded?”

By the end of the downsizing process, only a much smaller amount of furniture and personal belongings needed to be moved.

A Useful Principle

Fit the Belongings to the New Life

We often find that successful downsizing becomes easier when the focus shifts away from everything someone is leaving behind and towards
